    I have got a little ssg circuit running off 2 9v batteries and the coils are whining. When I increase the pitch with the potentiometer and increase the resistance it lights up my 110v neon bulb intermittently.
    Also what I found odd is when I set the pot at a "sweet spot", and shade the bulb, it ceases to produce light. I'm kind of confused as to why, it's not like it's a solar powered bulb LOL. Will post pictures and video soon.

    Hi RaidZero,

    First thing is you should never run any SSG without a charge battery. If you are lighting the neon you are risking damaging your transistor. Also you will find the tuning changes greatly when you have a charge battery connected. If you have a charge battery connected and are still lighting the neon that means you must have a very badly sulfated battery. It is best if you are just starting out and learning how to tune and use the SSG to only use good batteries. After you have learned how to tune everything and how to judge the condition of your batteries you can then build a cap pulser circuit to work on those batteries that do not want to take a charge straight from the SSG.

    As far as the neon only lighting when in full light that is a normal function of the neon. The neon gas will start to glow when the energy level of the gas reaches a certain level. The energy can come from the voltage applied to the bulb but also the neon will pick up energy from the light striking the bulb. You have seen that if the energy level is almost to the point of lighting the neon gas all it takes to push it into glowing is just the addition of some light from outside the bulb. This is perfectly normal for a neon bulb.

      Ahh ok thanks for the tips. So far the transistor seems ok. It doesn't appear hot and is cool to the touch after about an hour or so. So are the batteries and other components. I see what you mean about the neon bulb as well. I figured it had to be gathering energy from the sun I just wasn't sure if the gas was reactive to light. Now I know lol. I'm also wondering why the bulb is lit with 2 9v batteries when the minumum voltage of the bulb is 60v. Maybe due to the milliamps being high enough?
