  • advice on magnets on the wheel

    hello folks

my new wheel just lost its magnets.
we put them on with tec 7 but it did not hold out, even the tape over the top ripped appart. magnets all over the place

so now i have a question.
annyone ever tried drilling a hole in the center and securing them with a small bolt?
or would this interfere with the magnetic field?

    anny suggestions welcome

    kind regards

i don't know how many rpm you turning or size of wheel but for my 26 inch wheel i never get over 200 =225 rpm [150 -200] is the norm
I've always used C.A. SUPER GLUE. rough up rim with file or sandpaper where magnet will sit a few drops each get all magnets on//check spacing [i made a spacer block that fits between magnets to ck spacing] if all good a few more drops each magnet and wrap with fiber back

our wheel was turning at about 270 rpm.
        it lasted 6 hours

tec 7 and ductape didnt hold out

i want something strong to prevent dammage again

            Hey WW,

Have used the sticky magnets from TeslaG and fiberglass tape on two 26" OD wheels on my SSG for several months at rpm's up to 320 on extended runs with no issues. The tape is a backup to overenthusiastic installation - put the money in the glue and strong tape.

I can vouch for the 3M VHB tape as per TomC. I strapped my magnets with Scotch Tough Duct Tape. I tried a few other tapes but they all failed, this stuff has minimal stretch and good strength.

It's holding out pretty nicely and my new SSG has been running almost non stop for the last 4 days rejuvenating some golf cart batteries in radiant mode, I was randomly testing things on and off for days before that before I trusted it enough to leave the room. RPM is between 360 and 400 depending on the charge battery on a 20" wheel.

I put as much tension on the tape as I could between magnets and one thing I found is pretty much mandatory is strapping the end of the tape across the end section and around the rim as it likes to creep backwards with the centrifugal force; that's where things start getting hairy as the combined strength of all the strapping slackens off.

              Thanks

                I use this stuff,,

It is an Epoxy but not the thin runny kind, it's thick. I prefer the "kwick" version which let's you start spinning within an hour but they also have a slow setting version too.

hm bobzilla i think i have some kind of 2K epoxy glue somewhere
you might have a good one there.

i was thinking about cutting recesses in the side of the rim to fit the magnets in and lowering the distance to the bottom of the rim to make it stick better.

                  ok slowly i get somewhere

                  thanks so far

ok folks its up and running again

its now stable on 315 rpm and holding together

going to start now on a wooden wheel with 20 magnets
the beginning of a Multi coil system

                    wish us luck
