The common AC motor is a magneto/generator according to US Patent 382,279

"If suitable mechanical provision be now made for rotating the field magnet around the disk, the apparatus exemplifies the conditions of an ordinary magneto-generator and currents would be set up in the coils or closed conductors."

Electrons (protons) are torn from neutral air, and either the positive ions or the electrons are attracted to the conductor, while the charged particles drift. This effect can (allegedly) cause considerable power loss, create audible and radio-frequency interference, generate toxic compounds such as oxides of nitrogen and ozone, and bring forth arcing.

Both AC and DC transmission lines can generate coronas, in the former case in the form of oscillating particles, in the latter a constant wind. Due to the space charge formed around the conductors, an HVDC system may have about half the loss per unit length of a high voltage AC system carrying the same amount of power. With monopolar transmission the choice of polarity of the energized conductor leads to a degree of control over the corona discharge. In particular, the polarity of the ions emitted can be controlled (High frequency wave rectification DC to AC full wave), which may have an environmental impact on ozone creation. Negative coronas generate considerably more ozone than positive coronas (scalar energy is negative While earth's atmosphere is positive charged), and generate it further downwind of the power line, creating the potential for health effects. The use of a positive voltage will reduce the ozone impacts of monopole HVDC power lines

Tesla Coil induction corona from the vacuum...

You cannot have Corona in a Vacuum.. although the nature of the electric Discharge is termed as Glow-Discharge (normal neoan or fluorescent tube) of a Gas at very low pressure. yes you can have High-Field Gradients in the vicinity of a High-Vacuum enclosure..like that of a X-ray tube.. like wise you can have Corona Discharge in a Liquid Dielectrics(non-polar Dielectric) at extremely high Electric Field strength and High -Frequency of Resonance..the discharge takes its roots to Propagating Brush Discharge and ultimately result into Spark -Discharge (Breakdown) the breakdown of the constituent Dielectric comprises Plasma-chemical transition of the dielectric material.
